Highway Projects: Some Federal and State Practices to Expedite Completion Show Promise

FHWA plays a key role in funding and overseeing the completion of highway projects. In addition to providing financial assistance and establishing standards for state DOTs to build and improve highways and roads, FHWA-through its division office in each state-provides technical expertise and fulfills oversight functions. State and local governments execute the programs by matching and distributing federal funds; planning, selecting, and supervising projects; and complying with federal requirements.
