While genomics and related subfields are increasingly in the plant biotechnology research spotlight, there is a gap between advances in that area and issues of biosafety, according to Nap (Centre for BioSystems Genomics, Wageningen U., Netherlands). Based on a NATO-funded workshop held in October 2003, co-organized by the AgroBioInstitute in Sofia, Bulgaria, this collection of 22 papers is a major contribution to exploring that relationship. A particular area of concern to policymakers is genetically-modified (GM) crops. Topics range from the philosophical implications of the precautionary principle to the prediction of unintended ecological impacts of GM crops. There is no subject index.
