Compared to its 2017 predecessor,

isn't quite as thrilling and revelatory an experience, sounding more like the B-sides or afterthoughts of a far superior model.

can still craft a catchy earworm, and these songs are pleasing enough. However, the bulk of the effort consists of tracks that are interchangeable at best and forgettable at worst. This time around, the vibe is smooth, chilled-out, and a little boring. Rather than being another fun, beach/pool-friendly romp,
Vol. 2
is a collection of groovy comedown moments fit for smoke-filled lounges and other dark corners of hedonism. That being said, there are some absolute gems here, including "Potion" with
Dua Lipa
and
Young Thug
, a welcome carbon copy of
Vol. 1
's smash hit "Feels" with
Katy Perry
,
Big Sean
, and
Pharrell Williams
. Elsewhere,
21 Savage
's funk-bass "New Money" stands out with quirky lyrics (including the jarring and maybe a little gross "kush smell like armpit"), while the disco sparkle of "Stay with Me" at least sounds like
Justin Timberlake
Halsey
, and a returning
Pharrell
are having fun. Otherwise,
sounds like the album one might slap on after the
Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 1
