On their way home from repairing their woodland hideaways brothers Roger and Peter spot a stranger hiding in the woods. Their need to investigate overpowers any thought of danger in searching for the intruder. A few miles from where they live is a large red brick building known as the Rain Tree Orphanage for Boys. The eldest orphan is Jeremy a big and kind-hearted boy of 15. Although living miles apart and never meeting the brothers and Jeremy have a common secret.
