Stanley John Weyman (1855-1928), one of the greatest English authors of swashbuckling romances, was as famous in his day as H. Rider Haggard or Robert Louis Stevenson. Among his literary admirers were Oscar Wilde and Graham Greene.
'For the Cause' is a collection of five of his shorter stories, complex works of historical fiction set in 16th and 17th century France that engage profoundly with the social and political problems of the period, besides being highly entertaining.
