In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France and sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their epic journey of discovery. That opened the lands west of the Mississippi River to the people of the new United States of America and they came by the thousands forging a dramatic chapter to our history.
