This book examines the connection between, on the one hand, La Fortune des Rougon, La Curee, and Le Ventre de Paris, and the Paris Commune insurrection of 1871 on the other. It helps restore the political significance that they have for realism and for the relationship between the works of Zola and Victor Hugo.
