English summary: Edward Gibbon (1737—1794) was the greatest historian of his age. His "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," published between 1776 and 1788, has been considered an epoch—making work since its publication down to the present time. It is considered a triumphal fulfillment of all that history was conceived of in the Enlightenment, namely, historical scholarship, current philosophical trends, and beautifully composed literature. Immediately after the appearance of the German edition of "Geschichte vom Verfall und Untergang des romischen Imperiums," an intense reception followed in the German—speaking world that broke open the disciplinary spaces of individual fields and forms of knowledge. The variety of Gibbon's influence on German—language scholars, philosophers, jurists and poets is extensively documented for the first time, and from an interdisciplinary perspective, in this anthology. 18 articles survey the translation and transfer process of the adaptation of Gibbon from the first German translations down to the present time.
