This study presents the aspects that characterize the economic system of Venezuela, emphasizing its specific conditions as a country dependent on oil income, establishing the relationships between this rentier economy and the industrialization processes and especially with regard to the agri-food sector and the impact on the Food and Nutritional Security of the country.The study makes a historical rescue from the beginning of oil exploitation in Venezuela and how this changed the political, economic, social relations and food production. It provides information on the main public policies of economic development and import substitution developed by the various governments with the objective of producing food and freeing the country from dependence on imports. It brings some characteristics of rentierism, which makes Venezuela a very peculiar country in Latin America and how this is associated with the agri-food system and Food and Nutritional Security.
