English summary: Since Homer's time, the concept of sleep has had a great attraction for artists and writers. This volume traces the history of sleep and shows how ancient ideas are reflected in texts by Holderlin and Rilke, but also in Roman sarcophagus art and in works by Michelangelo, Lovis Corinth, and Giorgio de Chirico. Sleep is an enigmatic phenomenon. Far less is known about it than about the dream. It is generally regarded as a relative of death and as a state which, without dreams, would equal nothingness. Nevertheless, it exerted a great fascination on artists and writers, which can be seen in Homer's invention of the deity Hypnos. Eva Kocziszky explores the story of sleep and the transformations of ancient ideas. The basic idea according to which sleeping and waking belong to each other and interlock with each other comes from the ancient tradition. The author explores and interprets canonical texts from Ovid and Theocritus to Rilke and Durs Grunbein, as well as masterpieces of Roman sarcophagus art and paintings by Johann Heinrich Fussli, Lovis Corinth, Giorgio de Chirico, and Mark Tansey.
