When Princess Maya's space cruiser crashes on the world called Nova, she is desperate to return to her kingdom. To get there she will have to cross endless jungles filled with wild alien creatures and a race of intelligent beings who want her dead. Nevertheless, she is determined to set out on foot to reclaim her kingdom. Although Maya is highly intelligent and well-trained to rule as queen, she has never lifted a weapon or set foot beyond the safety of her palace walls. To make the perilous trip she must put her life in the hands of a man she does not trust.
Jack Jansen is an escaped prisoner, locked up for holding to his religious beliefs and refusing to worship the royal family. The same family that Princess Maya belongs to. Now that he is free, he wants nothing to do with her or her kingdom.
Even if Maya can convince Jack to help her, the two of them will have little hope of surviving the journey, unless they can find protection. They need a tarrexx, the largest and most ferocious animal on the planet.
