Manning organized companies and marched them from Ashley County. These two captains got permission to go to Virginia with their little battalion. Manning obtained the influence of Hon. Albert Rust, formerly a member of Congress, to organize eight companies, and joined the two companies at Lynchburg, where the regiment was organized.
