Shay Elizabeth Moton was born on November
21, 1974 in Detroit, Michigan. Shay is the 8th of
12 children born to her loving parents Tyrone &
Durinda Washington. Her parents instilled in her and
her siblings the belief in family and the strength and
power of prayer. Raised in northwest Detroit Shay
attended and graduated from Mumford High School (a
Detroit Public School). After testing the waters of the
workforce for a year Shay then turned to the historical black college, Wilberforce University
for her undergraduate studies. In 1998 Shay graduated from Wilberforce with a Bachelor's
Degree in Mental Health. Upon returning to Detroit, Shay took a position as team leader
and subsequently supervisor at Vista Maria; utilizing her education and working with young
ladies with social and educational disabilities. After several years at Vista Maria she turned her
attention to teaching. She has and is currently serving as a 4th and 5th grade teacher at the
New Providence Academy. Shay has always had a passion for kids, it is her belief that with
the support of spiritual leaders, parents, teachers, family, and positive role models our youth
of today will be ready to face any challenges that come against them. In the fall of 2003 Shay
was introduced to Anthony W. Moton, the man she would marry. What God puts together
let no man tear them apart, this belief is a continuation that Shay learned early in life and
it is something she and her husband continue to believe in. The passion of working with
young people is a gift from God, no person will tear that from Shay because it is with faith,
determination, strength, and power that all things are possible.
Valerie Keith was born and raised in Talladega,
Alabama. Valerie is a Administrative Assistant/
Graphics Designer at the New Providence Baptist
Church. Together we birthed this book out of
faith in God and the lack of substantive
information for our youth concerning successful
African Americans in today's society. Coloring
In Colors is a must have for every classroom,
household and learning environment.
