Memory comes in waves of image, sounds, tastes, smells, and feelings. One of my fondest childhood memories is of walking to the playground of the elementary school I attended with my Pappers; my paternal grandfather, Joseph J. Funyak. Pappers has Alzheimers disease and now lives in a shifting web of memory. In this photo essay, shot on an early September day, I thought of my Pappers as I took a nice slow stroll along the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Wharf in Santa Cruz, California.
