How important has Buddhism been to China historically? How much did the thought and philosophy of Buddhism contribute to the formation of Chinese culture as we know it today? The great American journalist Warren Gilbert Benton (1850-1931), with his short but interesting essay Chinese Buddhism, published in February 1891 on the magazine Popular Science Monthly, attempted to answer these questions.
