California and Back: An 1850s Adventure

In 1852, 23 year old Martin Noble Hine travelled to California in the Height of the Gold Rush to seek his fortune. During his 18 month journey, Martin witnessed several signifi cant historical events: life aboard a ship that ran out of food, a stop at a port where he was marooned and introduced to the local culture, a stay in Sacramento where he survived cholera and typhoid fever and witnessed the 1852 fire and following flood. The stories of this young man are exciting and compelling.
