"Building a Scholarship of Assessment's" contributors trace the history of outcomes assessment in higher education and bring it up to date with a summary of current status and impact derived from a national survey and follow-up visits to selected campuses. They then suggest the range of disciplines that provide the underlying theoretical perspectives on which the scholarship of assessment has been, and will be, based. The authors also describe some of the basic methods and tools that can be employed in the scholarship of assessment, present applications of those methods, and identify many of the sites across the country where such scholarly assessment is underway. They conclude with a series of principles of good practice derived from scholarly assessment to date and suggest some of the avenues for scholarship that are likely to bear the most fruit in future years.
