The
Somm
label's "
Bruckner
: from the Archives" series has brought wonderful discoveries in both the musical and engineering realms. This 2025 release is said to be the last in the series, and one may hope for a second set. The recordings, as usual, come from the 1950s and '60s, and there are some nice finds this time out. Some of the albums look back to rich, ultra-Romantic ways of performing
, and there is one example here, a recording by the
Vienna Akademie Kammerchor
and
Vienna Symphony
of the
Psalm 150
, that both exemplifies that manner and offers the most striking moment on the album from an engineering perspective even though it is the earliest recording (it was made by
Westminster
in 1950). The singers are recorded up close so that the individual members can be heard shimmering through the texture. The symphonic performances, with
Eugen Jochum
leading the
Bavarian Radio Symphony
at the Herkulessaal in Munich in 1957 in the
Symphony No. 8 in C minor
, and
Wolfgang Sawallisch
heading the
three years later in the
Symphony No. 9
(only the first three movements are played), are also quite strong;
Jochum
's reading is not so much High Romantic as energetic and forward-driving. Wonderful performances all around, and they would have been lost without the efforts of the Bruckner Society of America team that put these recordings together. May there be more to come! ~ James Manheim
