Black Magic and Murder is set in and around New Orleans. Tommy Ledge, a veteran detective from Washington, is chosen to investigate the death of a man in a parish outside of New Orleans. The governor requested a detective with Tommy's specific skill set for this investigation due to his relationship with the deceased. Detective Ledge encounters the strange inhabitants of Sugar Belle Plantation as he begins his investigation. Detective Ledge has to deal with people's fear of black magic supposedly practiced by one of the inhabitants at Sugar Belle. Detective Ledge soon learns that in order to solve the mystery around the death at Sugar Belle Plantation he must first solve another case connected to the governor and the governor's wife. As Detective Ledge wades through half truths and black magic he is only able to discover the culprit of both cases through a strange occurence.
