This is a story about a young girl named Elizabeth who arrived on Ellis Island from Germany at the turn of the 20th century. It documents her strength and resilience in the face of the tragedy she endured, and the deep and loving relationship she shared with her granddaughter, Gracie.
It was to be a relationship that shaped Gracie's life and inspired her to write this story.
What Gracie recounts as a young girl herself, living with her grandmother in Brooklyn, on Avenue M each summer, really did happen; her grandmother Elizabeth's (Ella) story is based on truth. What happens at the end of Gracie's life? Fantasy, or reality?
