Aesthetic issues are currently of high interest. But what should be understood by 'aesthetic', especially before the establishment of aesthetics' in the 18th century as an independent discipline? The present study investigates this question and outlines a historical understanding of aesthetics that helps to reinterpret premodern texts beyond the paradigms of "aesthetics" of the 18th century.
