Interplay is a Philadelphia-based quintet of eclectic musicians that draw upon jazz of various eras--hard bop, free, and fusion--as well as rock, funk, and world music. Ornette Coleman's electric music is a big influence as well. Interplay balance unfettered soloing and urgent, sinewy rhythms, featuring Elliott Levin's frenetic but soulful saxophone and Rick Iaanacone's jagged, searing guitar. Imagine Albert Ayler sitting in with Sly & The Family Stone or Branford Marsalis jamming with King Crimson. APOLOGY is trippy fun.
