Anthem for Millie

Mildred "Millie" Milby is born during a bitter winter storm in Moriarty, New Mexico Territory, in 1908. Two years later, her family moves to Milton, Oregon, where her father starts a grocery business. But when Millie is just nine years old her mother tragically passes away, and, although her father Arthur eventually remarries, the family is never the same. When Millie is fourteen a spat with Arthur's second wife turns ugly, and Millie is sent away to boarding school where she is forced to work in a laundry to pay her room and board. But in spite of her strained family relationships and meager finances, Millie refuses to give up her dream of attending college. She flourishes in high school and manages to scrape enough money together to enroll at Spokane University. This is only the beginning of a compelling life that would see her survive the Great Depression, raise three children, and lay to rest two husbands. A remarkable story of struggle and perseverance, is a loving daughter's tribute to an uncommon common woman.
