by Lawton Evans has always been one of my favorite books to use in our homeschool for elementary American History. The author has such a wonderful narrative style that always keeps students engaged. It's a living history book that works perfectly for the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling - where living stories nurture a child's love of learning. was written in the early 1900s and originally included insensitive language and attitudes regarding Native Americans and people of color. But because it is such a wonderful living book, many homeschooling parents still wanted to use it and resorted to 'editing on the fly' as they read it aloud to thier children.
