In 1864, Whit Deadeye Gillis is a renowned fourteen-year old
sharpshooter in the waning days of the Civil War until he is
coerced into serving as an assassin for a mysterious platoon of
aged mercenaries led by the wry Colonel Conrad Toombs. The
mission of the Papar in the bitter last months of the Civil War is
to murder Union General William T. Sherman, burning up the
Confederacy in the final throes of his March to the Sea. Promised
riches and fame, Deadeye joins the doomed expedition as the
epic journey unfolds in a blood soaked fever dream. The
consequences of Deadeye's dubious place in history haunt him
