Michael, Sofie's husband has like so many others been taken away by Hitler's army who has now fully invaded Poland. Did he commit a crime? No he was a Jew. Forced to flee she and her seventeen month old daughter Emma end up on a farm in eastern Germany where they survive in a tiny room for nine years. Thinking they are save they are forced to flee again since Sofie refuses to join the communist party or prostitute herself. They make it to west berlin where they live in a camp for many weeks.
