Daniel is considered an undocumented alien until granted asylum. As an asylum applicant, Daniel always has to prove his identification with his passport. His form of identification serves as a constant reminder of his nationality; it brings back awful memories he is trying to recover from. His mood is like a separate being, flustered and dabbling around. The uncertain residency plays a big role in his constant frights. There are times when he feels unsure of himself as an individual. At the end, Daniel realizes he is a brilliant edifice of nature-a gorgeous, breathing work of art.
