Excerpt from A Handbook of Musical Form for Instrumental Players and Vocalists: With Musical ExamplesO understand a piece of music well we must be able to. Grasp a composer's ideas, and the way in which he expounds and develops them. In this he follows a logical and systematic way, and unless we have an insight into the system it will be difficult, if not impossible, to follow the composer's train of thought or his musical argument, as we might call the development Of his themes. We cannot understand a written sentence unless we Observe the punctuation, or the way in which secondary or tributary sentences may be interpolated. That grammatical knowledge has become so thor oughly absorbed by us in the course of time, that we are scarcely, if at all, conscious of the rules.Music has sentences too, and motives which corres pond to words; these form phrases and the phrases combine to sentences.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
