A Catholic priest in 18th century rural France gets involved in a child murder by the father who raped the older daughter. He goes to Paris to find the girl to learn why she fled and what happened to her little sister. He meets an unusual woman and her solider companion who offer to help. While this happens he has to deal with a crisis in his own faith and looks to an older priest for guidance.
