(February 26, 1808 - February 10, 1879) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker. He created over 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 wood engravings, 1000 drawings, and 100 sculptures. His artworks depicted the social and political life in France from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the second Napoleonic Empire in 1870. He was best known for his humorous sketches and satires on the social class differences, political figures, politics and justice. He was prisoned for six months for publishing a satire of the French King Louis Phillippe as Gargantua (The Tax Eater, 1831). Book one of the two-book series contains 163 artworks from Daumier's drawings / lithographs. The original artworks are in public domain.
