Mavis transfers to a school of the arts at the start of her junior year to boost her dance credits and make herself a more well-rounded and attractive applicant. She doesn't plan on landing the lead in Chicago. She doesn't plan on meeting a dark and dreamy boy.
Challenged by Notre Dame to write a personal essay describing how she is incomplete, Mavis first thinks of her absent mother. Mavis is pushed by her best friend Fletch to go deeper, but can't see past the hole her mother left behind.
Mavis must balance the mounting pressures of school, rehearsals, and developing relationships while learning to see herself as more than the Mavis her mom left behind. On the line are her essay, her future, and her heart.
