Frank Spargo, a young newspaperman, comes upon a murder scene in the early hours of the morning in Middle Temple Lane, London. The victim has no identification, only a piece of paper with the name of a young barrister, Ronald Breton. Spargo, together with Breton and DI Rathbury from Scotland Yard, sets out to solve the crime.
