Excerpt from Memories of Jordans and the Chalfonts, and the Early Friends in the Chiltern Hundreds
IT may seem to savour somewhat of presumption for one who is not a member of the.society of Friends, to think of writing on matters connected with the history of a body whose members have developed a type of Christian life so distinctly their own. The writer of this little work, however, may plead in extenuation of his boldness, that he has only ventured to publish it after most kindly and urgent requests from various members of the Society, who had seen it, in a very imperfect and fragmentary form, in a series of articles which appeared in the Mz'a'dlesex and Bucks Advertiser during 1891 and 1892. He has now carefully revised and, to some extent, rewritten it, that it might be less unworthy of dedication to a religious body which he sincerely respects, as well as to all lovers of civil and religious freedom.
