Genetics is the science of heredity. It studies the hereditary characteristics of individuals, their transmission through the generations and their variations (mutations). It was the study of this hereditary transmission that led to the establishment of Mendel's laws. The discovery of DNA, the carrier of genetic information, led to the development of molecular genetics, which consists in analyzing the structure and function of genes, both normal and mutant, at the molecular level.
