Bertha Bigword loves big words. Her best friend, Jimmy Jolly, has to waggle his finger every so often to remind her to tell him what they mean. When their school is threatened by the appearance of a terrifying and elusive monster, Bertha and Jimmy decide to investigate. They need to find out what's going on or all the children will leave, and their school might have to close forever.
